All treatments or deliverance of healthcare, medical devices, medicines, etc. must start with a doctor’s prescription.
Always show your European Health Insurance Card (EHI-Card) or a similar authorised form to any doctor, practitioner, therapist, hospital or other health care provider. It is essential that the validity of your EHI-card has not expired !
Take care that all personal identification criteria (name, first (and middle) name(s), personal identification number) of your EHI-Card or of similar form are reported upon any issued documents needed for reimbursement.
Except for hospital in-patient treatment, you normally pay the costs to the practitioner or health care provider and ask a reimbursement by the competent authority "Caisse de maladie des Ouvriers "(CMO). (List of local agencies hereafter).
How do you get treatment by a general practitioner (GP), by a specialist or a dentist?
- Just contact any general practitioner (GP), specialist or dentist. All doctors are covered by a contract with the public sickness insurance scheme and must apply official tariffs to all holders of EHI-Cards or other authorised forms
- Addresses and telephone numbers of doctors may be found in the official White or Yellow Pages Directories or asked at emergency services Tel.: 112
- If you need help from a specialist or dentist you do NOT need a referral from a GP.
Reimbursement of doctor’s treatment
- Dependent on the category of care, 80%, 90%,95 % or 100% of official doctor’s tariffs are reimbursed
- Some dentist’s tariffs may be surpassed on prior arrangement with the patient
- Some dental treatments must be authorised prior by public sickness insurance scheme. Always check this point prior to delivery of dental care
- In/out-patient doctor’s honoraria are normally paid to the doctor by the patient. The reimbursement may be requested at the offices of the "Caisse de maladie des Ouvriers" whereas hospital treatment itself is normally paid directly by the public sickness insurance scheme.
Other benefits ONLY on doctor’s prescription !
- All benefits require a doctor’s prescription prior to delivery
- Dependent on the category of care such as physiotherapy, nursing, medical laboratory, radiography, medical devices, etc., reimbursement is 80% to 100 % of official tariff
- Some benefits require prior authorisation by the public health insurance scheme. Always check this point with the prescribing doctor or care provider before delivery.
How do you get hospital treatment?
- All hospitals are covered by a contract with the public sickness insurance scheme
- Service hours may be asked at emergency service Tel.: 112 or checked daily in local newspapers
- In acute cases always contact the emergency service Tel.: 112, as regional hospitals may be off emergency duty, especially during the night and week-ends
- In non-acute cases during service hours, contact any hospital for out-patient treatment in a policlinic
- If in-patient care is necessary, this is decided in acute cases by the doctor on duty or upon prior consultation with GP or specialist
- Upon arrival in the hospital, show your EHI- card or an other authorised form at the reception
- Fees for hospital care (except doctor’s honoraria) are directly paid by the sickness insurance scheme to the hospital
- A daily fee of ca. 12€ applies for aged over 18 up to maximum 30 days per
year. Upon request 1stclass rooms may be available. Room fee and
doctor’s honoraria then increase significantly on your own expenditure.
How do you get transportation to a hospital?
- Call Tel.: 112 in case of immediate need of transportation by ambulance to the nearest hospital on duty
- If vital, ambulance transportation is free of charge
- In case of non vital transportation, patients participate with 30 % of official transportation tax
- All emergency transportation is provided by public authorities
How do you get medicine?
- Show doctor’s prescription and your EHI-Card or another authorised form in any pharmacy. All pharmacies are covered by a contract with the public sickness insurance scheme
- Patients who are not yet registered in the national sickness insurance scheme must pay their medicine and may ask a reimbursement later at the "Caisse de maladie des ouvriers"
- Ask for cashier’s ticket when paying and keep it together with the doctor’s prescription
- Reimbursement is 0, 40, 80 or 100%, dependent on the category of medicine.
How do you get reimbursement in Luxembourg?
- In situations where you have paid the full price to a health care provider you may ask a reimbursement from the competent authority "Caisse de maladie des ouvriers" (CMO)
- Agencies are located in major cities throughout the country (List of agencies below)
- Show all original paid bills, receipts, prescriptions, cashier tickets or referrals
- Show your EHI-Card or any other authorised form. ID can be asked
